If you arrive by air you could arrive at one of the four airports serving London. The largest is Heathrow to the west of London. Gatwick airport is south of London in Sussex. Stanstead is to the north east of London in the county of Essex and Luton (mainly charter flights but several low cost carriers with regular scheduled flights also operate from there). There is also City Airport just east of the City of London but this has relatively few flights.

The Underground (The Tube) runs right into the airport and has fast and frequent trains to central London. The system is very extensive and you can change lines to reach most central areas. The tube is divided into 6 price zones. As Heathrow is at the western extremity of the system it is in Zone 6. The journey time is about 50/60 minutes to central London. Trains run every few minutes from around 5 a.m until 11.30 every day except Sunday when they run from approx. 6 a.m to 11 p.m. There are two Underground stations at Heathrow one serving terminals 1, 2 and 3 and the other terminal 4. Buses/Coaches run from the various airport terminuses to Central London. It may be advisable to not use this service during the morning or evening rush hours when you may encounter delays.These coach services run daily to London Victoria between 5.30 a.m and 9 p.m The service is roughly every 30 minutes and takes around 40 minutes but could be considerably longer during times of traffic congestion.
Rail The Heathrow Express is a direct rail connection from Heathrow to Paddington Station which takes just a few minutes. This is the quickest and most efficient way to central London and trains leave the two Underground stations approx every 15 minutes from 5 a.m to midnight every day. Taxis are available at taxi ranks. Taxis in London charge according to the fare shown on the meter. However, Heathrow is outside the city limits and it is wise to negotiate and agree the fare in advance.The fare is likely to be £45 / £50.

Gatwick Airport is about 30miles (50 Kms) south of London in the Sussex countryside and thus much further away from central London than Heathrow.

Stanstead Airport

The Airbus leaves Victoria and takes at least 1 hour and 40 minutes.
A taxi would take well over an hour and be in the region of £90.
Luton Airport
Luton Airport (web site http://london-luton.co.uk) was almost exclusively for charter flights until a relatively short time ago but now that low cost airlines have appeared on the scene the aiport is used for both charter and scheduled flights. Two of the low cost airlines which operate from Luton are Easyjet and Ryanair. Easyjet has now expanded to other airports and also operates flights from Gatwick. Luton airport is about 30 miles (58 Kms) north of London The nearest rail station is a short bus ride from the airport. Thameslink rail serve Luton and call at several London stations.
National Express run a 24 hour bus service with a frequency of about 30 minutes.
